Certain flavors quickly become part of a vacation in Belize. Fresh seafood by the Caribbean Sea, warm fry jacks in the morning, a plate of rice and beans with stew chicken, and somewhere on the table, a bottle of Marie Sharp’s hot sauce.

Certain flavors quickly become part of a vacation in Belize. Fresh seafood by the Caribbean Sea, warm fry jacks in the morning, rice and beans with stew chicken, and somewhere on the table, a bottle of Marie Sharp’s hot sauce.

For many travelers, that first taste happens at a restaurant or resort. A few drops add a flavorful habanero kick to breakfast, tacos, or grilled seafood. But behind those familiar bottles is an inspiring Belizean story that began with locally grown peppers and grew into a brand enjoyed around the world.

For travelers interested in discovering more, a visit to The Old Man Farm in southern Belize offers the opportunity to explore Marie Sharp’s story, sample her famous products, and experience a unique medicinal plant tour.

Who Is Marie Sharp? The Woman Behind Belize’s Famous Hot Sauce

Marie Sharp is the Belizean entrepreneur behind Marie Sharp’s Fine Foods, one of the country’s most recognizable brands.

Her journey began in 1980 at Melinda Estates, her family’s farm in Belize’s Stann Creek Valley. With an abundance of locally grown habanero peppers, Marie began experimenting with recipes using fresh peppers, vegetables, and tropical fruits.

Encouraged by friends and family, she turned her homemade sauces into a business in 1981. What began in a small kitchen eventually developed into an internationally recognized company.

Today, Marie Sharp’s products are enjoyed around the world, with a diverse collection of hot sauces, jams, jellies, and specialty products.

Her success has helped put Belize on the map, making Marie Sharp’s a wonderful example of Belizean entrepreneurship and determination.

What Makes Marie Sharp’s Hot Sauce So Special?

Habanero peppers are famous for their intense heat, but Marie Sharp’s stands out for its balance of spice and flavor.

Unlike many traditional hot sauces, Marie Sharp’s signature red habanero sauces use a carrot-based recipe, creating a flavorful combination of natural sweetness, tanginess, and heat. Other varieties feature ingredients such as cactus, citrus, and tropical fruits.

From mild sauces to fiery habanero blends, there’s something for nearly every spice preference.

In Belize, pepper sauce is a familiar part of the dining experience. It pairs perfectly with traditional rice and beans with stew chicken, breakfast fry jacks and eggs, tacos, garnaches, and freshly caught seafood.

Trying Marie Sharp’s alongside these local favorites is a delicious way to experience Belizean food and culture.

Visit Marie Sharp’s in Belize: The Farm and Hot Sauce Tasting

While Marie Sharp’s hot sauce is widely available throughout Belize, visiting The Old Man Farm in Hope Creek, near Dangriga, offers the opportunity to discover the story behind the brand.

The Marie Sharp Experience & Tasting introduces visitors to the company’s history, its operations, and how locally grown ingredients are transformed into its famous products.

And then comes one of the best parts of the visit: all the tasting!

Taste Over 30 Marie Sharp’s Products

Visitors have the opportunity to sample over 30 Marie Sharp’s products, including habanero hot sauces, jams, jellies, steak sauces, and other specialty items.

From mild and flavorful sauces to varieties that really bring the heat, tasting several products side by side is a fun way to discover their different flavors.

The jams and jellies provide a delicious contrast, highlighting tropical fruit flavors that many visitors may not have tried before.

During our visit, we especially enjoyed discovering just how extensive the Marie Sharp’s product line is beyond the familiar bottles of hot sauce.

The experience takes approximately 45 minutes and is a fun addition to a day exploring southern Belize. You might even discover a few new favorites to bring home!

Explore Nature’s Pharmacy: The Medicinal Plant Tour

There’s another fascinating experience at The Old Man Farm that goes beyond hot sauce.

Nature’s Pharmacy, also known as the Medicinal Trail, is a guided nature walk introducing visitors to more than 36 varieties of plants and herbs traditionally used in Belizean healing practices.

Along the trail, visitors learn about the historical uses of different plants and their connection to Belize’s cultural heritage and natural environment.

Making Our Own Natural Hair Masks

One of the highlights of our visit was the hands-on activity at the end of the tour.

After learning about the plants along the trail, we made our own natural hair masks using some of the plants we’d just discovered.

It was a fun, interactive experience, and we even got to take our handmade hair masks home as a unique souvenir.

The Medicinal Trail takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Sturdy footwear, comfortable clothing, a hat, and insect repellent are recommended.

For travelers interested in nature, traditional plant knowledge, or Belizean culture, it’s a memorable experience that offers something different from the usual sightseeing activities. The tour explores traditional knowledge rather than offering medical advice, and hands-on activities may vary.
