Understanding Belize’s Natural Beach Environment

We want you to know what makes Belize’s beaches special before you arrive. Unlike typical Caribbean destinations, Belize’s coastal waters feature natural seagrass beds called “turtle grass”—a sign of our thriving marine ecosystem protected by the world’s second-largest barrier reef. You’ll enjoy warm, calm waters that stay consistent and are unlike destinations where strong currents can shut down beach days.

What about the Sargassum Seaweed I’ve heard about?

From time to time, you’ll see Sargassum seaweed wash up along beaches throughout the Caribbean, Central America, and even parts of the southern United States. This seaweed naturally drifts from the Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic, and usually, ocean temperatures and currents keep it away from shore. While we stay on top of beach cleaning to keep your vacation spot beautiful, it’s good to know that this is simply part of the natural Caribbean coastal experience.
